Free Guitar Hero Controller!

Woot! Well, it wasn’t exactly free but close enough. I traded in 4 games: Halo 3, Fifa 2008, Lego Star Wars: Original Trilogy and G.R.A.W. 2; in total these four games got around $45, but Gamestop also gave me a free $20 to go with them because of some promotion. Thus, the total was over $65 and, when combined with my $45 gift card, I well covered the cost of the $70 Wireless Guitar. And, obviously, I still have $40 left on my gift card (which might go towards a Rock Band Drum Set).

So, now Kiyoshi and I can play Guitar Hero Co-op all weekend long! Or at least until our wrists get tired (already done).

Sunday Plans

Yeah, I got up late again, I may just keep this same schedule until I have a need to get up early. I made a video for Grinderschool already and I’m debating whether or not I want to keep it. It is due out late next week and I may try for higher poker quality but I need to run it by JGB first.

I am seriously going to try and get some 400 NL hands in. I’ve already watched another DC video and I need to get some experience in. The first thing I’m going to do is move my laptop back over to the dining room and get ready for some serious play.

After I play I am going to get some exercise and then watch the Sox/Cub game tonight.

Day 7-8: Still Playing!

Still 16 left in the $550 at the Venetian, I’m probably ~12ish or so, maybe 10th at best. We start up again at 4pm local time and 1st is $70k. If I make final table then I break even on the trip.

Blinds are 10k/20k/4k and I’m at 340k in chip, 17 bb but only 5m, which is kind of gross but that is my comfort level. I was 4th in chips with 45 to go but went hot/cold on hands, I either got monsters or complete air and nothing even marginal enough to blind steal with. I built my stack by sucking out 10 BB with AJo vs AQ AI preflop and then got AK allin vs AQ and that held too. I got a couple RR in there to get as high as 450k but then blinded down until we quit for the day.

We stopped at 2 am and most of the other players wanted to keep playing, I pretty much told them to go fuck themselves as they were trying to pressure the two of us into playing until the Final Table. I was tired as fuck and I wasn’t going to budge.

Anyway, wish me luck. I figure even if I get into 2 coinflips thats 25% chance I’ll get top 4 with 2 double ups, top 6 get 5+ figure cashes. I was able to build my stack yesterday from 30k and 10 BB up to 100k and 20 BB without ever going to showdown over the course of a couple hours. I dont know how good these remaining players will be in shortstack play but I imagine they will be better than the previous ones. I’m a little nervous before we start but I’ve played against better players online and have been in worse situations so experience is definitely on my side.

Wish me luck!

Day 4: Everything Else

Well, the line to the breakfast buffet was too long to even try and get behind so we decided to just head to Caesar’s to eat lunch before the tournament started. I had a ‘Mexicana Wrap’ which I guess is just Las Vegas language for a burrito. It was pretty good although it was expensive, nothing special though and it can’t beat the burritos in Champaign.

During the dinner break the lines were so long in Caesar’s eatery area that the only place without a line was a sandwich shop. I ordered a hot turkey sandwich on garlic bread it was pretty good; with the food voucher I earned for 8 hours of play It only cost me $3.

After the tournament was over I just walked back to the room and didn’t really do much. It is hard to get any cash game play in when I’m already playing 9+ hours in tournaments AND I have to be prepared to play the next day which could be a 14 hour day too.

Time to go through it all again today, as its my largest buy in of the trip. I’m playing a $1000 tournament at the Venetian (and it better not be H.O.R.S.E).

Fish? I don’t think there are any

The weather today was pretty awesome, just like I thought it would be. There was hardly a cloud in the sky and, after my dad and I went out for breakfast we went fishing.

For the first hour or two we tried to catch some catfish by using minnows, just like we did at the end of yesterday’s fishing session. Again, we had no luck. My dad did catch (and kill) a small white bass but I continued to tell him that it didn’t count because it died.

From there we decided to do some casting up and down the bank with some jigs for bass, walleye, or just about anything. He again caught one small white bass and I didn’t even have a bite all day. Standard.

My dad’s friend Jim came down and wanted help to put his boat in the water and, since we were bored, we agreed. Yay boat ride! Well, we got everything hooked up but alas, fate wasn’t with us as when we go to turn the motor over he blows the spark plug right out the back end. That is a costly and time consuming fix so we wont be going on any boat rides any time soon.

It’s OK though, as there is talk of firing up the hot tub…

Quitting early

I had to, I had a small headache going into my second session and after 500 hands it was exponentially worse. I only got 500 hands in my second session so in total I only got 2k hands in, but in those 500 hands I ran sick hot and won 5.5 buy-ins. I’m going to go lay down and relax for a bit. I’m all out of aspirin but hopefully I will feel better.

Hello everyone. Some of you may have been expecting television reviews, others investment and poker advice. Well, I still plan on doing all of that.

JeffreyLipsey.com is a combination of 3 blogs: Coderedpoker.com, Lamererun.com, and shortstackstocks.com. I’ve always been interested in investing and money, which probably is one of the reasons I’ve always done so well at poker. Throw in the fact that I watch a lot of TV, and you’ve found the premise for this site. I got tired of having each specific blog for different parts of my life when, really, I just want to write about my life.

Hulu: Free television available on the internet, legally

I recently got my request granted to be a part of the Hulu beta-testing program at www.hulu.com. If you aren’t aware, I’ll just quote wikipedia:

Hulu is an online video on demand service that is also expected to offer video sharing. The service is a joint venture of NBC Universal and News Corp. Providence Equity Partners has also made a USD$100 million equity investment and holds a 10% stake in the company. The partnership was announced in March 2007 and the name “Hulu” was chosen in late August, when the website went live. The service offers full-length episodes of NBC and FOX television programs, including shows from the Bravo, Fuel TV, FX, Sci Fi, Style, Sundance, and Oxygen channels. Hulu also offers selected movies. The website is currently in limited beta testing. During this test, thirty second advertisements are presented intermittently, usually in the place a normal three minute ad break would be placed.

If you don’t have access to the beta then you can goto http://www.openhulu.com (at least for now) to access most of the shows that are in the original beta. Not included in the openhulu site (at the time of this writing) is more TV shows and several movies available for streaming.

I plan on writing more on the Hulu.com beta in the upcoming weeks as long as the writers are on strike. I’ll be posting the same feedback I give to the creators in this area and I might sneak a video review out as well.

Leno, Conan set to come back

From: CNN.com

The new year will see new shows from Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien, says NBC.

Jay Leno (left, with Gordon Ramsay) and Conan O’Brien will return to air January 2, says NBC.

“The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” will return with all-new episodes on January 2, according to a statement from NBC. The shows had been in reruns for two months because of the Writers Guild of America strike.

“During the 1988 writers strike, Johnny Carson reluctantly returned to ‘The Tonight Show’ without his writers after two months,” said NBC’s Executive Vice President for Late Night & Primetime Series, Rick Ludwin, in the statement. “Both Jay and Conan have supported their writers during the first two months of this WGA strike and will continue to support them. However, there are hundreds of people who will be able to return to work as a result of Jay’s and Conan’s decision.”

Both shows will return without their writers, The Associated Press reported, leading to conjecture over what form the programs will take. In recent years, late-night talk shows have been as much about scripted comedy routines as talk, unlike the raconteur-driven versions of the form hosted by people such as Jack Paar.

In a statement, O’Brien acknowledged that “[a]n unwritten version of ‘Late Night,’ though not desirable, is possible — and no one has to be fired. So, it is only after a great deal of thought that I have decided to go back on the air on January 2nd,” he said.

“I will make clear, on the program, my support for the writers,” he continued. “Of course, my show will not be as good. In fact, in moments it may very well be terrible. My sincerest hope is that all of my writers are back soon, working under a contract that provides them everything they deserve.”

Both Leno and O’Brien have been paying staffers’ salaries since early December, following in the footsteps of David Letterman, who has paid the employees of his “Late Show with David Letterman” and “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” since the strike began November 5. Letterman’s production company owns both his and Ferguson’s shows, which air on CBS.

Leno, O’Brien and Letterman are all guild members.

Letterman has been in negotiations to bring back his and Ferguson’s shows with their writing staffs, according to an article in The New York Times Sunday. Jon Stewart, whose “Daily Show” on Comedy Central has also been in reruns since early November, has also trying to establish an interim agreement with the guild that would allow his show to return, according to the Times.

Residuals and new-media revenues are the primary issues driving the walkout.

Since the strike began, only NBC’s “Last Call with Carson Daly,” among late-night talk shows, has returned to air. Daly, who’s not a member of the Writers Guild, says NBC told him to come back or 75 members of his staff and crew were going to be laid off. His show resumed December 4.

This is definitely a blow to the writer’s strike, as probably the most noticeable absence on TV these last few weeks has been the lack of late-night programming. That said, the WGA must recognize that the TV world employs many people outside of writers and hosts. Although I support the strike, I am not against the shows restarting production to pay the rest of the employers.

Until Daily Show and Colbert Report comeback, this will be a good opportunity for the other late-night shows to gain lost ground on some of the coveted younger audience. I haven’t watched Conan O’Brien regularly for years since the boom of the Comedy Central broadcasts, although I’ve always been a huge fan.
