Stand Mixer!

Marlyn looked at the Kohl’s Ad in yesterday’s Washington Post and noticed a Kitchen Aid Stand mixer on sale. Link

Plus you get an additional $20 off mail in rebate. So how did I get mine for $120? Well, if you sign up for a kohl’s credit card you get an additional 15% off that purchase price so that’s $30. On top of that every $50 you spend at Kohl’s you get a free $10 gift card to be used in the next couple weeks.

So $260 stand mixer on sale for $200, minus $20 mail in rebate, minus $30 discount from credit card, minus the $30 in gift card = $120.

More about the Stand Mixer:

The stand mixer definitely is not the $500 one that is probably worth the money if you could afford it. The two big differences between the $500 mixer and $260 mixer is the wattage and the size of the bowl. The $500 mixer has 550 watts of power whereas the $260 only has 275 watts, or pretty much half the power. I have no idea how the difference in power would effect anything as I would have to run tests to find out; if you want to listen to the sales clerk who said that the lower power wont allow you to make as big of batches when you cook then you may.

The size of the bowl matters too. The $500 mixer gets you a 6 quart bowl in comparison to the 4.5 quart bowl you get with the $260 version. I think 4.5 quarts is enough for my personal use but I would plan on buying the best one I can afford when this one wears out (hopefully 10 years or so). Also the $500 mixer comes with a $20 plastic pour spout that I’ve never seen anyone use before.

Attachments:

In terms of attachments the $260 version and the $500 version should run all the same attachments. Power-intensive attachments such as the meat grinder might wear down the motor more in the cheaper version and that is where the more wattage would come handy. Unfortunately attachments of all kinds are expensive and in some cases more than the cost of our machine itself. I was looking into getting the meat grinder but I’ll probably just use the food processor for the time being; I’ve already got a manual pasta roller and I don’t find it cost-efficient to pay $120 for a new set. If there was a converter out there that allowed you to use the manual pasta maker in the stand mixer that could be cool.

How’s poker been going? Don’t ask. My mom is visiting the first week of November; I’ll be in Denver the 2nd week and in Indianapolis for Thanksgiving.

Now that Marlyn is going back to school, she’ll be sequestering her laptop back and I’ll be without one. I don’t need a big one just one to surf the net and maybe use as a poker base for when I’m traveling. I’m looking at 4 right now:

MSI - Wind Netbook
Gateway Netbook
Acer- Aspire One Netbook
Asus - Eee PC Netbook

I’m moving towards the Asus right now but they’re all pretty comparable in terms of specs and stuff. The biggest difference would be the extra hour of battery life they advertise–4.2 hours compared to 3.05 of the others. Reviews have the same pluses/minuses for each too so I don’t know if it matters much.

Beginning of Summer Trip

Well, I arrived in Chicago Saturday afternoon with Marlyn and got picked up from the airport from my friend Anna and her boyfriend. The plan was to go to Frontera Grill in downtown Chicago as Marlyn and I had been wanting to go to any of Rick Bayless‘ restaurants for quite some time. They’ve started to replay Mexico: One Plate at a Time again on PBS and since I’ve gotten his cookbook I’ve become a sort of Mexican Food Connoisseur.

The food prices weren’t that bad, at least considering what Marlyn and I are used to paying in the DC Metro Area. Probably the thing that stood out the most to me was their home-made tortillas; I could tell the difference instantly and it makes me want to get some fresh Masa and make some myself!

Marlyn and I didn’t get into Aurora until 10 pm at night and on Sunday she got to meet the extended part of my family. I was a little nervous as there is a big disconnect between the personalities but I am happy everything went off without a hitch.

On Monday, we went up to the Geneva Commons Shopping Mall and Marlyn was able to get as much shopping as possible out of her veins with me there. She likes to complain about how I never go with her to pick out cloths so I was able to earn some brownie points there; hopefully I wont have to go back to Anthropology for quite some time!

I’m writing this now as she just left for the airport and I’m going to Ach-n-Lou’s Pizza with Mickey and Kiyoshi tonight; I don’t know how that pizza place is going to be I remember going there many, many years ago and I thought it was OK.

I leave for my dad’s on Thursday and then fly out to Vegas on Sunday which I should have more updates then.

Another week gone by and still no progress

Is it Friday already? WTF!

I mean seriously where has the time gone? I’ve not played any poker in two weeks now and I need to get myself out of this funk. Not only do I not make any money when I don’t play but it also puts me in an overall bad mood. So then why don’t I just get started?

That good folks is the thousand dollar question. Unfortunately in my case the absense of a good thing doesn’t make me want to do it more. Looking back on it I was flirting with procrastination for weeks. My friend Mike can attest to how many times I’ve complained about not wanting to play but I forced myself to anyway. Can this be a cause? Is this some sort of burned out?

To the majority of people that I know I have no argument for being burned out. My friends all work 40 hour weeks and barely get 2 hours a night to themselves, Marlyn included. I guess to them I’m just a spoiled lazy jackass which I’m forced to be OK with. I can argue they don’t understand what its like to live ‘my difficult life’ but I’ve got no legs to stand on there. It is times like these where I wish I could complain with the masses; if only complaining about how much my job sucked wouldn’t fall on such deaf ears.

So what can I do? Well, luckily I do have things that will allow me to be productive in the future and then hopefully I can get back at it. Maybe doing a bunch of videos will get me back in the groove again and when combined with all the coaching I’m doing now it allows me to not get too far from the game itself.

One thing I know is: I’m probably the only one around here hating the fact that its a Friday.

March so far

…has been going kind of slow.

I got in a lot of volume the first week: 18 hours of cash game play, 4 hours of coaching and 6 hours of tournaments which puts it at a total of 28 hours of pokering. Unfortunately this week I’ve done very little other than play Xbox and question my motivation and future happiness. Since Friday I’ve been debating on doing more on things that I really enjoy; the first thing that came to my mind that isn’t video game related was cooking.

Today was the first time I really did research on culinary schools and cooking classes in general. Maybe I didn’t realize what it was getting into the culinary field; who wants to spend $50,000 for 2 years tuition only to make $15/hour? I also spent a lot of time reading forums considering I wasn’t getting much luck googling any other information.

I didn’t find any all-star praises for going to one culinary school over another and basically its all about how skilled you are if you’re going into that profession. That said I started to look into ‘online’ cooking courses and wasn’t expecting much although I was surprised. Sure, I could spend $100-250 on few hours of video OR I could just look around for some kind of lesson plan then just do whatever I want with that.

I mean, I’m a guy who has a ton of free time and the internet has so much information on it I don’t see myself paying for much of anything like that. Marlyn had a good point: remember all the classes I took in college that were pointless and I could have googled everything? I found a good start to something I’m possibly interested in:

It’s called Cooking With The Times; basically several years ago the New York Times ran several issues detailing how to cook. In these articles, they posted intricate details as well as video explanations on each process and, when combined with my other experience, I should be able to learn everything I’m wanting to know and hopefully feel happier about the direction I’m taking my life. Sure, I realize this isn’t going to be an end-all to happiness forever but it might either open up a possibility or close a door and it wont cost me that much money.

And as Kiyoshi suggested if I parlay a fraction of the money I would have spent on culinary school into better equipment and food, I’ll get a lot more out of it in the long run. Maybe I’ll update more when I try new things from the NYT but I’ve been unmotivated to do a lot these days that doesn’t involve me sitting on a couch and watching time fly by.

I’m engaged!

I know I haven’t had continuous updates, but I would like to wish the 5-10 people that continually read my blog a merry christmas. I am still in Aurora right now and tomorrow I head to my Dad’s for a week.

The most exciting thing that happened was that Bill came back on Saturday and we drove down to Mokena to drink and play rock back; that was definitely a fun time. Bill and I then hooked up on Monday to watch the Bears squeak out a win vs the Packers at Peyton’s Round House here in Aurora.

I would like to spend more time updating. . . but its xmas!

Arrived in Aurora

Well, I haven’t updated in a while but needless to say I’ve been pretty busy. I left Virginia last Monday morning around 7 am EST and arrived in Champaign about 6 pm CST. It did take me just about 12 hours to drive back if you include stops for gas and food.

In Champaign I was spending the week at my friend Kavin’s place who is a poker buddy of mine. We were going to go to Sushi Kame for some low priced but good quality sushi but found that they were closed. We walked the 1/2 block to Ko Fushion instead; they had dollar sushi night and him and I each ordered a combination plate for $10 and I ordered a classic Gin and Tonic. I also had some ‘Pheasant Sausage’ which was very sweet tasting and pretty good; I had to get it because I couldn’t see myself ever being in a situation where I’ll be able to have it again.

After dinner we went back to Kavin’s place and he told me he had gotten into ‘Axis and Allies,’ a pretty awesome board game that I refer to as “Risk on Steroids.” Luckily I was nerdy enough in my college years that I learned to play (and dominate) the game through the hours and hours and hours of time I’ve spent playing. The rules have changed a little bit but the strategy not as much; I ended up winning as the Axis power (something extremely difficult to do and only accomplished once or twice before then if I remember correctly).

The next day I pretty much had no plans and spent it all hanging out with Kavin. We ended up grinding for 4 hours on Absolute and didn’t run so hot, although I’m still trying to adjust to those games. For lunch we went to Lai Lai Wok for their awesome fried rice and Fried noodles with beef (although I have no idea the official name for it). After poker we went to Jupiters for their Special K pizza and played an hour of pool and had some beer. We then made it back to his place and played another game of Axis and Allies, of which I won again as the Axis. That ended late and I went to bed as I knew I had a long day coming on Wednesday.

I was to meet my friend Yana at noon and we were just going to hang out all day. We went to lunch at Bombay Grill (on my suggestion, which is weird) and I had some Lamb Curry (which Marlyn has me hooked on) and that was pretty good. God I miss Champaign food prices, the entire meal was like $7 and I couldn’t even finish it all.

After lunch I went to go pick up wine at Meijer to take back to Virginia. They only sell the Oliver Wine that Marlyn and I love at Meijer or online; I picked up 24 bottles at $7 a bottle which cost me quite a bit after Tax. I’ve already given away 3 bottles of it as gifts and I probably expect another bottle or two to be given away as well, but I think 18-19 bottles of wine should be plenty to last us until my next trip into Illinois.

After that trip to Meijer we went back to play some Wii and kill time before dinner; I finally met her boyfriend and, FWIW, they’re an odd pair lmao. I think I’ve played every Wii game out there BUT Wii Sports which is getting annoying because I hear that’s the best game. The other games that I’ve played are ‘RavMan’ and ‘Party Games;’ we also spent quite a bit of time playing Tetris as that was one game I had a ton of experience on (the matches between me and Yana’s boyfriend were intense!). In the end, I don’t think I’ll end up buying a Wii, as the games were only somewhat entertaining. However, there are two games that I would buy the Wii for and they were on older systems. I could buy ‘Earthbound’ and ‘Secret of Mana’ for $5-$10 each and frankly I’d be super happy with that, although I have a hard time justifying spending $200 on a gaming system for 2 $10 games lol.

For dinner we hit up Radio Maria’s for Tapas and the first of our many drinks. I ordered a Whiskey-Sour with Dour’s which was a drink I haven’t had in forever and takes me back to my pre-scotch days. For dinner, we started with their awesome marinated olives and had a Masa Boat (excellent!) and then split the fried goat cheese on toast with honey, which was also very good. I never tried anything new as frankly, I don’t have time to gamble. We finished it off with some scallop ceviche which was actually not that great (although it was her choice not mine).

From there we went across the street to the Cupcake place (where she works) and we split a Pumpkin Spice as well as a Purple Velvet cupcake with a double espresso. The pumpkin one was real good and I was able to finagle the recipe to try at home (although don’t tell anyone). From there we went next door to the Blind Pig to hang out with the rest of the hipsters and drink some nice beer. Since it was a Wednesday it wasn’t that busy in there; I had a Lindeman’s Framboise which was refreshing. We got to talking movies and she hadn’t seen “O Brother Where Art Thou” so we went to Rentertainment to rent it.

Frankly, I would have much prefered to watch ‘Finding Forrester’ but she got to choose since she was the one paying $1 for the rental (I think I still have a $20 late fee there lol). By the time that movie ended it was getting pretty late; it had been a long day between quality food, drinks and entertainment I was pretty tired.

Thursday in Champaign I was to meet up with Jamey, some with whom I’ve known since high school. He had a final earlier I believe so we didn’t get to catch up with him until during the Bears game. I got up around 10ish or so and completed a poker video for Grinderschool while Kavin was at work. I picked him up for lunch and we headed to Esquire for some good and cheap bar food. I had their steak sandwich with fried mushrooms and diet Coke. I think the whole thing cost like $9 or something; again, I love the cheap prices.

After lunch, I dropped Kavin off for him to go to work then I went back to his place to finish up some Grinderschool work and play in a special instructors-only tournament. When Kavin came back it wasn’t long until we had to head somewhere to watch the Bears game since it was on NFL Network. Apparently he gets the Golf Channel but not NFL Network, which was pretty lame. We went back to the place we went to last year but found that it was packed. We tried Jupiters again next door and we were lucky enough to get a seat.

Since neither of us were into pizza we were kind of limited to the food we could order. They only had salads and appetizers; I ordered an extremely filling Spinach and Crab dip and I could only fish 1/2 of it, even though it tasted pretty good. We were happy that the Bears won and afterwards went back to Kavin’s place to play some FoosBall and then eventually get to bed.

I was leaving Friday for Kiyoshi’s place in Mokena; I was originally going to be there at Noon, then 2 then 4:30 and then finally arrived at 6:30 PM. Before leaving though I managed to make back some earlier losses with Kavin from playing poker and went to the last local favorte: Los Amigos. I ordered their carne asada nachos and finished every last bite, even though it was a ton of food.

In Mokena, Kiyoshi and I ordered some Pizza Hut and got right at playing video games and drinking beer, first Halo then Call of Duty 3 (old school) and finished the night watching ‘Sin City’ on Kiyoshi’s new big screen TV. Jamey ended up coming down and joining in on the video gaming and spent the night (he had to bring the beer though).

In the morning we went right into video gaming, back at the Halo and COD3 and we didn’t even eat until 2 pm. At that point we ordered some Jimmy Johns as we didn’t want to quit playing; I’d say that was the last place I had on my list of places to eat at. I ordered the Italian Club #9 with peppers, something that I used to order all the time when I was a freshman in college, but later ‘graduated’ into more affluent tastes.

After Jimmy Johns I got to test my Rock Band Drum skillz but there must have been something off with the synchronization from what I was used to at home as I was having trouble keeping up with the notes. I still did OK and did fail a couple on Expert, but I hadn’t played it in forever either. I was almost motivated to go buy a couple songs available for download but I can’t usually convince Marlyn to play with me so I decided against it.

Kiyoshi went to a party in Chicago and I stayed in Mokena to hang out with Mickey. We played some Lego Batman and then went to Jewel to buy some dinner which was just as satisfying as going out to eat. We came back to cook our cheap beef steaks and food and then I introduced him to ‘Assassin’s Creed’ and then went to bed.

The next morning I got up around 9 although I didn’t hear a peep out of Mickey until almost Noon. I managed to get a lot of busy work done so I was pretty productive, albeit hungry. When he got up we went to get some breakfast at a local diner and I ordered a 5-egg Chorizo Omelet. Apparently, 3 eggs aren’t enough for them to make an omelet out of so now I can’t have any food for a week because of how much cholesterol I ate. The whole meal was pretty average and it was more entertaining trying to explain to Mickey about how bad the economy is and how bad it could get.

It wasn’t long before Mickey’s girlfriend Sarah showed up and they disappeared for a while, which was disappointing because I had to leave in only a couple hours. I wouldn’t have minded spending a couple more hours with him but oh well, not much I could do. I drove back to Aurora in time for dinner and basically that is where I am right now.

Black Friday Results

Yep, I got up early. One, because I had to get Marlyn up and two, I wanted to go see what I could buy. My first stop was at Office Depot; they had a laptop on sale for $350 and I wanted a good shot at getting one of those. I didn’t leave though until at least 8:30 am.

Since they have been open for a couple hours I didn’t expect to actually buy the HP Laptop and I was right. I was still there for 30 minutes though as I attempted to find a router they had on sale; Office Depot though had no Black Friday signs up so you had to go around and match the SKUs which took quite a while. They did have a few of the routers left so I picked up one of them and headed on to Pep Boys for a GPS Device.

Pep Boys had a sale going on for a $70 GPS Device which was a Tom Tom but by the time I got there they were all out. They did have 2 refurbished Magellan Maestro GPS devices for $5 more so I went heck, why not? If it lasts me 2 years I’m happy. After Pep Boys I scooted on to Target.

I can’t mention a couple things I bought at Target in fear of giving up some of my xmas gifts, but I did manage to finish shopping for my brother and mom. I also picked up several DVDs, including 30 Rock Season 1 and Psych Season 2; both were selling for $13.99 and are worth well more than that. Other movies that I picked up for $6 or less: I Am Legend, Gremlins, Goonies, Goodfellas, V for Vendetta, Interview with a Vampire, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

A couple of those I purchased at Best Buy, along with a Camera for Marlyn for only $60; again if it lasts 2 years I’m happy. I spent the rest of the day at home messing my GPS device, apparently you can hack the crap out of it and do a ton of cool things. More on that later.

The Race: A Play Based on the Election(?)

Posted by admin on Oct 31st, 2008

Oct 31

The question mark is there because I am still confused at what this play was about. Here’s an email Marlyn received about The Race:

As the 2008 Presidential election reaches a fever pitch, Georgetown University’s Theater and Performance Studies Program charts ever more daring artistic territory with the world premiere production of The Race, an interactive, wildly unpredictable and entertaining civic theater project that is unlike any theatrical production you have ever experienced.

Conceived and directed by Visiting Professor Michael Rohd, The Race breaks down the traditional walls by incorporating a cross-section of voices into an on-stage conversation about some of the most important issues raised by the upcoming election: Who will vote for whom? Who won’t? Why? And most specifically, what does leadership mean today?

The show itself is a three-part event. Part One is a performance that sets up the rules and questions for what follows. Part Two asks the questions- and uses interactive media and deceptively simple structures to involve the audience, and participants around the country, in the conversation. And Part Three mines completely different territory by marrying elements of a town hall meeting and a karaoke bar.

We were expecting a history of the 2008 election as it happened so far, but with actors and actresses and hopefully some funny dialogue. You know, the actors would mimic the candidates from the start of the primaries through the end of the election. Sure, we know what happens in the end but that doesn’t mean the play can’t be good.

Given that they started work on this project 18 months prior, this sounded like a reasonable assumption. What also fed this assumption was that as you walk in, they’re showing video clips and audio tracks from all the candidate’s primary runs. Remember those old Huckabee and Ron Paul commercials? This play could actually be good.

Wrong! And on so many levels. Maybe it was the theatre that the play was held in, but the technical aspects of the play were horrible. They only had two microphones (yes, handheld mics) that they had to pass around to the 12 cast members so they could talk. Wait, this isn’t a 4th grade play is it?

In the middle of the play they tried doing some web conferencing with other students from all over the globe (I still have no idea what the point of that was). Apparently, Apple computers DONT handle video conference that well. Because we couldnt hear any of the people they were talking to as they had audio problems. So what did they do? They translated what the people said to us. Wow, you know you could have saved 10 minutes (literally) of play time? If you had just read the questions and answers aloud in the first place.

Questions and answers–Keep that thought in your head because I think a good 1/2 the play was just the actors asking questions to each other then they respond unrehearsed. We paid $15 in tickets for this! There was no acting. This wasn’t a play. This wasn’t a performance. It was like we had to pay $15 to hear what other people think about the election and the world today. And by other people I mean college students; more specifically: college students at GEORGETOWN. Almost as much as I hate conservatives for their ignorance and moron-ism, I dislike liberals for their narrow views and right-bashing.

That’s right, I hate everybody (except for independants). I personally don’t care what college students think about what makes a good ‘leader’ but frankly, I bet they could have Googled “college student,” “blog,” and “leadership” and saved everyone hours of their time. This isn’t even including the poor actors who followed that director for 18 months.

18 months!!! WTF? I’ve seen better productions put on by my high school ‘Winter One Acts’ that took only a few months to put together. What a waste of time and resources (and the liberals blame the republicans for the recession…zing!)

Maybe it was our fault for interpreting this play wrong, but this thing was absolutely dreadful. If it was a movie we would have walked out 30 minutes in. But, we already took the metro ride into the city to watch a play we might as well finish it.

There was one bright spot to the play (other than when it ended). It happened when they had everyone in their chairs get up and fill some bleachers they brought in to make a mock ‘town hall’ type feeling. Trust me, we weren’t the only ones who didn’t want to get up (especially the guy surfing the internet ON HIS LAPTOP); but since it improved the performance I’m guessing it was a good thing.

The ‘karaoke’ mentioned in the email came from this: people were asked to get up and give campaign speeches, taken from the candidates themselves. Yes, the Giulani speech referenced 9/11 3 times in 60 seconds; no, Huckabee didn’t mention Chuck Norris in his speech. People that gave boring speeches (like McCain) were pretty lame. I would have much rather chosen to listen to a Ron Paul or Dennis Kucinich speech, if not purely for entertainment value.

Outside of this 10 minute session, the rest of the performance was pretty bad. I still don’t understand what it was about and frankly I don’t think I want to. I feel bad for one person though: Marlyn. She tried hard to find an entertaining play and, if our assumption was correct, then I think that it would have been much more entertaining.

Oh well, at least it got me out of the apartment for one night. I’ll end this post with the funniest lines of last night. It happened from a guy sitting behind me about 20 minutes into the performance:

God, this is awful.
