Book Reviews
Small Stakes Hold’em by David Sklansky and Mason Malmuth:
My poker bible. If you are just getting started with Limit Hold’em I’ll have you read this book first.
Hold’em for Advanced Players by David Sklansky and Mason Malmuth
Not really relevant to low stakes play, and not too relevant for short handed games either. Has some decent concepts in it but the advice in here is outdated.
Theory of Poker by David Sklansky
Decent book, although not exactly one of my favorites. I didn’t learn too much from this book as by the time I received it I was already pretty advanced. The concepts are accurate still in today’s games and I wish I had read it earlier than when I did.
Physcology of Poker by Alan N. Schoonmaker
Not what I was expecting, and kind of a disappointment. I was hoping for more advanced concepts but I think the beginning of the book is still OK reading.
Super System 1 By Doyle Brunson
Haven’t really read that much in here, although some of his concepts are a little fishy. I’ve stayed away from it in the past because I was a Limit Hold’em player and he deals almost entirely with No Limit. I would not buy his book to learn about Limit, and for No Limit there are still better books out there.
Super System 2 By Doyle Brunson
Again, still haven’t read the entire book. I did read the Limit sections and although the advice is pertinent its not exactly something I would buy for a Limit player. But the No Limit advice is pretty solid.
Caro’s Book of Poker Tells by Mike Caro
Good book for learning tells for live play. It even has pictures and everything and is a must have if you play live a lot.
Poker Essays 1 by Mason Malmuth
This book was better than expected. It covered some of the most advanced material that has yet to be written about and I really would like to read the other two.
How to win at Omaha High-Low Poker by Mike Cappelletti
I bought this book on a whim to learn a game other than Hold’em. He gives you an easy way to learn and master the game, and it works pretty well. Omaha Hi/Lo isn’t all that difficult to begin with and once you learn it its a fun game to play, especially live.
